Our review of SurrealEstate Season 3 Episode 1 ponders why, after wrapping up so many character arcs, Roman Ireland hasn't moved forward yet.

Welcome back, SurrealEstate fans!
I know I skipped out on SurrealEstate Season 2, but life was different then. Now, I run the show, and we can do what we want! Score!
I wish SurrealEstate Season 3 Episode 1 had the same spirit. Somehow, it feels stuck in its sophomore season, unready to move on to new things.

If you’re like me, you felt a little out of sorts during the second season. Luke had lost his powers at the end of SurrealEstate Season 1, along with his dad, his earnest quest for his mom, and his new girlfriend, Megan.
As if that wasn’t enough, Susan got stuck in the spirit of her new home (or something like that), and she was MIA for most of it.

We did grow to love Lomax, and it was a positive experience we don’t want to overlook.
So, it was kind of surprising when the band finally got back together, and in the finale, SurrealEstate threatened to tear it all apart again.
Well, it did tear the team apart. Phil got a job with the Vatican, Auggie returned to more clear scientific pursuits, and Zooey went to law school.

We even got to see Carl Roman one more time. When Luke’s abilities resurfaced, he (almost) got a proper goodbye. As the season drew to a close, it seemed like we were beginning a new chapter.
Susan was back and a full partner, Lomax remained, and Luke was back in business with his abilities.
“Buckaroo” proved that creator and showrunner George Olson either isn’t ready to let go of the characters he loves, or he has no idea how to do it.
I’m going to assume it’s the former because, otherwise, the story is as interesting as always.
The story seemingly picks up three years after the finale.

I’m not entirely sure because varying references to time throughout left me puzzled, but I don’t know how else Zooey could be a practicing attorney or how Roman Ireland would go through 35 potential replacements for her if it hadn’t been three years.
There were three “haunting” type stories this hour in addition to the Roman Ireland plot.
The first was resolved quickly, but it made an impact. About a century ago, a man got his housekeeper pregnant, tried to kill her and failed, but still stuffed her undead body up the chimney, where she slowly roasted.

It’s not shocking she’d want vengeance, and once she got it, she didn’t need to stick around to savor it. Her mission was accomplished.
Another one involved a couple who bought a normal house only to discover it was haunted, and the third introduced a man named Tyler MacNeill, whose body was overtaken by an old nemesis of Carl’s, intent on seeking justice for his woes by going after Luke instead.

The buckaroo story was sweet, if not spectacular. I had difficulty watching so many long-faced male characters with facial hair on the same screen.
I can’t be the only one who thought MacNeill and Cowboy Rick looked similar. Tossing in the previous owner’s father, sans facial hair, almost got me, but he turned out to be Cowboy Rick.
But the stories that touch the heart are always favorites, and we could all use the reminder that doing what we love is more important than setting our sites on finances, letting our dreams go unfulfilled.
I’m not entirely sure who MacNeill is or why he wants vengeance on Carl, but I doubt we’re supposed to know that yet. It’s likely to be a long arc because these personal arcs have become tradition.

Most of the characters have gone through them. Susan lost her mother, Zooey lost her boyfriend, and Luke lost his mother and father, with long arcs dedicated to each.
But how long can Luke and co drag their feet about the next chapter of their lives? Luke is still meeting Auggie for assistance on the site and Megan for drinks. Zooey is training her never-ending trail of replacements.

It’s she who asks Luke to consider a different approach. Instead of looking for replacements, which would be impossible, why not look for different people entirely, each with their strengths?
That’s the question I have for the series myself. Why are we back with old faces when we already wrapped up their storylines at the end of Season 2? What’s the reasoning behind dragging them back into the story they were just released from?
Does the vengeance arc for Carl, which is coming for Luke, show Luke how to move on?

I haven’t seen any casting news, so I have no idea what’s to come. But I do know that holding onto the past, if the characters have no future, doesn’t work for the story, and it doesn’t work for viewers.
We need to rip the band-aid off and plunge into the unknown so that we have time to welcome new faces. It’s only the third season, but the first proved how warmly we can embrace characters we’ve just met; we can easily do it again.
What did you think about the premiere? Remember, if you were looking for story details, you can find them at the link at the top of the article. There’s a full recap waiting for you to read it.
