Olympia continues to take on the "Slammed" case while Matty's sister, Bitsy, opens up old wounds. Read the Matlock Season 1 Episode 14 Review!

Things are definitely coming down to the wire with Matlock’s newest discovery and subsequent conclusion.
We’ll get to that in a minute because it’s just too juicy not to go into great detail.Right now, we have to give it up to Matty and Bitsy’s friend, Cindy Shapiro. Who here thought she was definitely a made-up character? Those Cindy quotes are going to hit differently now.
Usually, Matlock is great at balancing drama against an adequate amount of humor, but those days might be taking a beat. Things are looking heavy for the foreseeable future.

That said, it was so good to see Julie Hagerty did not disappoint in the slightest. She was so perfect in this episode that I have to believe she and Kathy Bates are friends in real life with their instant chemistry.
Even Though Matty’s Mission Is Justified, Her Motivations May Not Be as Altruistic as She Thinks
One thing “Game Day” gave us was a small look behind the curtain that is Matty’s past. I see why Edwin called Matty a “Bull in a China shop” on Matlock Season 1 Episode 13.

For starters, Madeline Kingston was a career woman, through and through. However, I don’t blame her for setting her sights on her own future.
Sure, it was sad that Bitsy missed out on attending college, but Matty isn’t a mind reader. She even said she would have “encouraged” Bitsy to go if she had known.
Well, some say the best teacher is life, and Bitsy has certainly paid attention to the lessons.

She was right that Matty has turned her mission into an addiction and even lost sight of how what she is doing will affect everyone around her.
I hate to say it, but Matty needed to hear that her revenge wouldn’t bring Ellie back. Also, Sam Anderson’s (Justified) Edwin was right on the money when he said that if their daughter hadn’t overdosed, then she likely would have at some point.
Honestly, this whole mission has more to do with Matty self-comforting the guilt she still carries around rather than about bringing the guilty party forward.
Don’t worry — we’ll get to that crazy revelation soon, but first, we have to talk about how Julie Hagerty (Wilfred) wasn’t the only guest star on Matlock Season 1 Episode 14.
Matlock Continues to Shake Things Up with More Guest Stars and a Three Episode Arc About the Biggest Case of Olympia’s Career
Was Marley Shelton just looking for something to fill her day? How did she end up on Matlock for less than five minutes? Though she is making the CBS rounds with a recent role on Tracker.

I’m surprised she didn’t play a more prominent role in the episode, given her experience in films like Solace, the Grindhouse movies, and the Scream franchise.
However, considering the case is far from over, we’ll probably see her again as long as the ADA drops the case against the girl who spiked the daughter of Shelton’s character’s drink.
If you’ve followed the Matlock reviews, you know I’ve said that some of the cases felt like they could be fleshed out into multiple episodes.

And yet, I completely missed that the previous episode was called “Pregame,” this one was “Game Day,” and the next is “Game Face.”
The proof was in the pudding, and I had no spoon.
Honestly, though, while it would be great for Olympia to win the case, it seems like her time at Jacobson Moore might end– I know. We’ll get to it.

Before discussing the heaviest part of “Game Day,” we will take a page from Matlock’s book and level things out with a bit of levity.
Matlock Has Locked in the Comic Relief of the Show, and It’s a Perfect Match to Balance Out the Character’s Rather, Let’s Say, “Intense” Energy
So, it’s fair to say at this point that Sarah is the show’s comic relief, and it completely works.
For one thing, she is hilarious with her random, eyebrow-raising comments. Remember Matlock Season 1 Episode 7 with the holiday party?
Billy asked Sarah to take something that didn’t belong to either of them, and Sarah responded, “I love stealing. Don’t think about it too much.” That was the moment I fell in love with the character.
Speaking of “love,” I thought for sure Sarah and Kira had called it quits. That was the vibe I got from their rooftop exchange on “Pregame,” but I guess not.

I really don’t know why Sarah is even humoring the idea of an open relationship. I have nothing against people who are into those kinds of setups, but that definitely isn’t for Miss Franklin.
She would have already gotten on board with it if it was.
I get it, though. She doesn’t want to let go of her incredible connection with Kira because those don’t exactly come along every day, especially not for people as tightly wound as Sarah.

Now, she has to deal with her nemesis, Simone, who is far more active in her “mean girl” status than Sarah (Leah Lewis) deserves. Did you see how Simone has already started planting the seeds of doubt in Billy?
Miss Franklin does not need these kinds of distractions when she has obtained her dream mentor. If anything, I assumed Olympia’s mentorship would be all Sarah ate, drank, and breathed.
That said, it’s finally time to get into the meat of this episode.

If “Game Day” Proved Anything, It’s That Nothing on Matlock Is Ever as It Seems, with the Beginning and End of This Episode Being Called into Question
Listen, I don’t want to say, “I told you so,” but if you read my breakdown of the suspects, you will see that I have never really thought Julian was the Welbrexa culprit.
Olympia seems like the most dramatic and entertaining choice, considering the bond she and Matty have built. I so badly want it to be Shae or even Senior’s assistant, Stuart.
Although, if you think about it, Shae could still be who Matty should be gunning for.
Matty’s conclusion that it was Olympia is based on the fact that whoever had Julian’s (Jason Ritter) keycard went to the ladies’ room.
We all remember that the Welbrexa cover-up might have happened around the time of Julian’s affair, right?

Sure, we don’t know the exact date that Shae and Julian hooked up, but it does mean that Shae could have easily accessed Julian’s keycard.
Even the Olympia (Skye P. Marshall) in Matty’s head confirmed that no one would notice someone else using her ex-husband’s key.
More to the point, every Matlock fan has learned one fundamental lesson regarding the series: Nothing is as it seems.

Considering the series kicked things off with a twist, I have no doubt in my mind that there are MANY more coming our way.
And with an iconic executive producer like Kathy Bates, whatever the big reveal is, it will be delicious and gasp-worthy.
I’m placing my bet now that it’s not Olympia for no reason other than having a handful of episodes left before we reach the Matlock Season 1 Finale.

For now, though, we should buckle up for the next episode, likely the concluding chapter on this “Slammed” case.
I sure hope Marley Shelton and Julie Hagerty stick around for “Game Face” because they are both scene-stealers in their own right.
What did you think of Julie Hagerty’s performance?
Do you think the Welbrexa culprit is actually Olympia?
