Madeline Matlock's latest plan in her pursuit for the truth presents a moral problem because of its potential unintended consequences. We discuss!

It was easy to root for Madeline Kingston when she finessed her way into Jacobson Moore during Matlock Season 1 Episode 1.

She would later reveal she had a secret agenda.

Matty planned to expose some lawyers in the firm for hiding important research that could have taken opioids off the market early and saved her daughter’s life.

It felt like a timely thing to explore, given how many people big pharma has driven to addiction and early graves to feed its never-ending greed.

Matty arrived with a plan and contingencies.

The short version was that she’d gain the trust of the lawyers at the firm, access privileged documents, and expose those vipers for enabling the indirect murders of innocent people.

On paper, that seemed like an easy task, and it was going to be fun watching her work in the shadows to uncover the truth.

As the kids say nowadays, I was sat.

It was never going to be easy. There would be unforeseen hindrances, but given how smart she is, Matty would always know how to navigate this.

Jacobson Moore turned out to be your regular TV firm. It was filled with bloodthirsty lawyers who always fell short despite having a slightly inflated sense of worth.

These were the shortcomings Matty intended to exploit. Her first target was Olympia Lawrence, the de facto queen of the firm.

She exuded confidence and purpose, battling with the men who dominated the firm for an opportunity to be seen. That would have impressed Matty if she hadn’t thought Olympia was morally bankrupt.

Being her first target, Matty cozied up to Olympia, doing everything a woman of her age, wealth, and experience should not be doing.

But as they spent time together, Matty saw the real Olympia.

She was a kind mother and a rare breed of lawyer who would squeeze corporations to afford her pro bono cases and help people who needed her.

Matty realized Olympia was amazing and could not have hidden the Wellbrexa documents. Soon enough, another target presented itself, and Matty was convinced Olympia was innocent.

From Olympia to Senior, Matty worked through the available evidence, which soon led her to Olympia’s ex-husband and Senior’s son, Julian.

According to her findings, Julian might have faked Senior’s signatures on some documents, and right around that time, Julian fell into some cash.

Who are we kidding? He fell into a lot of money, so much so that he bought his bride a brownstone in New York.

Those things are not cheap, and Matty suspected Wellbrexa had paid him.

The goal was to get into Julian’s finances and confirm if there was anything unusual with the payment.

Matty Crosses a Line

With Edwin and Alfie cheering her on, Matty unveiled her new plan.

She would manipulate Olympia, forcing her divorce proceedings to get so ugly that Olympia would demand Julian’s financial records.

When Matty sets her sights on something, she never misses.

Now, Matty cannot be blamed for the disintegration of the couple’s relationship. They did all that by themselves.

Yet, something must be said about her decision to manipulate Olympia, who has proven decent.

Even more concerning is that they have developed a friendship built on trust — at least Olympia thinks it is trust.

She has opened up about her struggles with Julian’s infidelity. Instead of keeping what was shared in a moment of vulnerability, Matty has used the information to further her agenda.

She has been so successful in her plans that Olympia and Julian cannot be in the same room without an argument breaking out.

Is this how someone treats a friend? One who welcomed you to their team when no one else would take an old lady?

At some point, the anticipated end doesn’t justify the means, and Matty has crossed that line.

There Could Be Unintended Casualties

If matters escalate between Julian and Olympia, things could become so ugly the scars will be carried for the rest of their lives and their children’s lives.

It might influence the divorce outcome, exposing children to the nastiness of contentious divorces and potentially swinging the pendulum too far on either side.

Matty needs to find a way to get to Julian’s records without making innocent people collateral damage.

It’s encouraging that she’s feeling bad for using Olympia in this manner, but action would be better.

Am I insane for thinking this plan is not so great?

Do you think Olympia will be able to forgive Matty when she inevitably finds out?
