The past three seasons of Power Book III: Raising Kanan have been tough for Raq, and it doesn’t look like things will be changing in season four.
Power Book III: Raising Kanan Season 4 Episode 1 looked back at the events of season three through a different lens, and it was a difficult time for Raq, who had some secrets she was carrying.
The tension and estrangement between Raq and Kanan was still pronounced and showed no signs of thawing, and that relationship will once again be at the forefront of the Power spinoff.

Since the series began, Patina Miller has fully embodied all things Raquel “Raq” Thomas and TV Fanatic was lucky to spend a few minutes with her talking about the season and what we’ll see from Raq.
Enjoy this one, Raising Kanan fanatics!

When we meet Raq this season, can you tell me what her headspace will be like? Where will she be after everything that transpired in season three?
Well, at the top of season four, they have a clean slate, especially in terms of, you know, the FBI and all this and that. There is sort of the relief of not having to watch, or so she thinks, watch her back as much. Being able to just focus on the businesses where she is.

She is trying to focus on the business, build it even further, and really get in with Stefano a bit more. But she is also navigating this new world where Kanan is a business partner of hers, navigating that relationship and figuring out what this new relationship looks like.
She doesn’t know that, obviously, something’s brewing with Unique, coming back to life. She doesn’t know that yet.
But for Raq, she feels this is a clean slate for her to focus on her business, get it together, and try to just continue to do that. Now, it’s not perfect because then you learn about her mom and all of these things.

Is she going to have to deal with that? It’s a lot about the family, now having to deal with things that maybe they didn’t want to deal with, which is going to prove to be heavy for them this season.
You just touched on this, too, but we’ve seen the relationship between Raq and Kanan really deteriorate since season one in a lot of different ways. Talk to me about the evolution of their relationship from the beginning to where it is now and where we will see it go this season.
Yeah, so the evolution of the relationship has just been the two of them forever. They have been each other’s sun and moon and stars and all those things. They’ve been very much locked in.
Then, obviously, throughout the first season, you watched Raquel try to really inspire Kanan to go off and do something with his life. She really tried to be that mom, the mom that she should be. Because she’s navigating it as well, she had him very young.
So, they’re on this journey together, and his win was going to be her win in that way. Then, to watch it kind of fall apart through consequences—actions have consequences for both of them.

Now, to be in this place with her son, where he definitely has lost all trust in her, you’ve watched her fight every single time to regain some sort of control with him and be in his life in a way.
In the fourth season, she knows that she doesn’t have control of him anymore. She knows that that’s lost. She will never stop fighting for it because he is still her son, but she’s kind of letting him be, in a way, because she doesn’t want to shake it up again. She’s letting them exist in a way.

So, being a business partner is a way for her to teach him some things and keep an eye on him, but she doesn’t want to do too much this season. She really is just focused on being in her business, trying to get that sorted out, and dealing with all of that.
Four seasons in, you’ve gotten to play Raq, and you’ve gotten into her head and her shoes. What do you think you learned about Raq this season, something that maybe you didn’t know about her before?
What I’ve learned about Raq this season is that she is, and I’ve known this before, but what we get to see this season is to see her be a full human. As powerful as she is, she is still human; she is still a woman, and she does have feelings.

People will say all the time, ‘Oh, she doesn’t have feelings.’ It’s like, no, she just can’t sit in her feelings because she has a business to run and so much on her plate.
To watch her have to navigate her feelings and her vulnerability, and just being with herself, that’s been the new thing. It’s like, who is she when she has to be with herself and navigate these big feelings of trauma and feeling let down by her mom?
What trauma has her mom caused in her life? Had that relationship been better, what could she have been like? So, she’s having to deal with a lot of that stuff this season.
Family drama, family issues, and their matriarch. That’s what I’ve learned about her, just really being human, really human.
What should audiences expect from this season? What can we look forward to?

Hey, listen, I think we’ve proved season after season that we should expect the unexpected. I think it will continue to be a wild and crazy ride.
Unique is alive. He’s on a mission, and how he disrupts the Thomas family’s world, we shall see. With every season, there are always bangers. This story, these characters, and the world that they’re in are never going to be lalalalala. There’s a lot of big stuff.
