The Vampire Diaries was a defining series for The CW.
What initially appeared as the network jumping on the bandwagon of the vampire craze that was reignited by the Twilight movies blossomed into a hit drama series that garnered strong ratings for most of its run, and even spawned a spin-off, The Originals.
While some of the cast members were unknowns at the time of the series hitting the air back in 2009, they were well-known by the time the series wrapped in 2017.

1. The Original Cast
When the series debuted, it included a mixture of new and veteran TV stars. Even some of the seasoned veterans were propelled to further stardom as a result of the series' success...
2. Nina Dobrev, Then...
Dobrev was the female lead when the series kicked off, and the former Degrassi star quickly blossomed into a household name as a result of her excellent acting skills. Dobrev exited the series after Season 6, but returned for the series finale in March 2017.
3. Nina Dobrev, Now...
Dobrev moved on to movies after her tenure on the fantasy drama, and has appeared in xXx: Return of Xander Cage and Flatliners. She starred on CBS comedy series, Fam for one season. She also starred in Run This Town in 2019.
4. Paul Wesley, Then...
Paul played one-third of the series' most well-known love triangle. He played Stefan Salvatore. Before the series, he had roles in TV shows such as Another World, Guiding Light and 8 Simple Rules.
5. Paul Wesley, Now...
Wesley moved on to directing after leaving the series and directed an episode of Shadowhunters in 2017. In March 2018, he joined the New York Theater Workshop's production of Zurich in New York City. He now stars on CBS All Access drama, Tell Me a Story.
6. Ian Somerhalder, Then...
He played the villainous other Salvatore brother, Damon Salvatore. He feasted on the residents of Mystic Falls during the show's earlier days, before turning a corner when he realized how strong his love was for Elena.
