If there is one thing CBS is good at, it’s keeping audiences in the dark about what’s in store for NCIS: Origins.
The promo doesn’t do much in terms of details, but there’s plenty of intensity.Considering the nature of the series, we have a lot of gunfire and standoffs ahead of us. So, what about the show sets it apart from any other procedural on television?
For one, NCIS: Origins gives fans of the franchise a look into the back story of a series vet. That’s expected given the show’s premise.
The series’ real strength will be in how well the characters are developed. And since NCIS has been going strong for over twenty seasons, the pressure is on.

NCIS: Origins Gives New Viewers A Chance To Join The Franchise Fresh
As said above, the NCIS: Origins Season 1 Episode 3 promo doesn’t give much in the way of storytelling. The main takeaway is that Gibbs seems to be on everyone’s minds.
It also seems like the story’s main plot will revolve around Gibbs’s late wife and daughter. More specifically, what happened after the case was closed.
As I said in my NCIS: Origins Season 1 Premiere Review, I don’t want to burst anyone’s bubble by giving anything away. However, I’m only giving the show one or two more episodes to tell on itself.
With Franks and Strickland meeting in private during the premiere episodes, it’s safe to say the newest “probie” could be coming under investigation. Again, if you know, you know.
If that is the direction NCIS: Origins is going in, they’ll have to retcon some of NCIS. I don’t think the big secret will be kept for twenty years like we previously thought.
Since the series is a prequel, all of Gibbs’s most significant life events have already been addressed in NCIS.
Still, some viewers may have seen NCIS: Origins as a chance to get into the long-standing franchise for the first time.

NCIS: Origins Is Not Afraid To Breathe New Life Into Old Tropes
One thing we know for sure is that the series will focus on Special Agent Lala Dominguez. The present-day Gibbs is heard at the end of NCIS: Origins Season 1 Episode 1 saying, “This is the story of her.”
The guy is a lady magnet and a thrice-divorced widower. Maybe he should stick to chasing criminals instead of hearts. I don’t blame his ex-wives, though. Have you seen this man?
Sure, Mark Harmon is classically handsome, but Austin Stowell is one tall drink of water. It did not take the ladies at the NIS long to notice him.
We wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility for viewers to expect Gibbs and Lala to become romantically entangled. Unless Dominguez has a girlfriend, these two are definitely headed for some heated moments.
Currently, Gibbs and Lala are going through the required amount of time the newbie and the seasoned professional have to go through to hate each other before they knock boots.
I don’t create the tropes. I spot them from a mile away.
These Are The Untold Stories Of Leroy Jethro Gibbs
We would do well to keep a close eye on Franks and Strickland. It isn’t clear yet what they are up to, but it’s not hard to make educated guesses.
Is it even a procedural if characters aren’t having clandestine meetings at night about something that hasn’t yet been revealed to the audience?
Strickland is putting the Miss in mystery. The agent can be heard in the promo referring to Gibbs “going rogue.” It sure didn’t take long for Gibbs to ruffle feathers.
Franks seems to be Gibbs’s biggest cheerleader. However, he could go with the classic “keep your friends close” chestnut.

Kyle Schmid (SIX) is doing an impressive job playing a franchise-favorite character. But what do we really know about Franks from this time in Gibbs’s life?
Again, I have to point out that everything involving the death of Gibbs’s wife and daughter has already been detailed on NCIS.
It begs the question, “What could NCIS: Origins show audiences that they don’t already know?” My guess is that some of Gibbs’s history is about to be rewritten or revealed.
After all, these are the untold stories of Leroy Jethro Gibbs.
Gibbs, A Man Of Few Words, Now Finds Himself Surrounded By Some Truly Chatty Individuals
Speaking of that brick wall of a man, we can’t say we know much of what is happening behind those blue eyes despite being two episodes in.
Gibbs’s trademark silence is well-known in the character, but you’d think he’d have more pep in his step thirty years younger.
It doesn’t look like he will have a choice, though. For a man of few words, Gibbs is now surrounded by some genuinely chatty individuals.
First, there is Caleb Martin Foote as Special Agent Bernard “Randy” Randolf, who, while still good at his job, will likely talk Gibbs’s ear off at some point.
Then there is Tyla Abercrumbie (The Chi) as Field Operation Support Officer Mary Jo Hayes, the self-described “Head Secretary in Charge.” I would not mind seeing plenty of her.
In the few brief shots she was in during the premiere, Mary Jo stole every scene she was in.
There’s something about her swagger and the way she doesn’t give a crap that feels so hilarious and familiar. Not that the character is a trope or anything.
There’s a good chance we’ll see more new faces as NCIS: Origins continues to world-build. I mean, Gibbs hasn’t even met Patrick Fischler’s Special Agent in Charge, Cliff Wheeler, yet.
We have a long, intense road through the past ahead of us, so buckle your seatbelt. History is about to be made — literally.
