ABC Renews 13 Shows - Cancels Schooled, Bless This Mess, and More!

ABC made an exciting announcement Thursday:

It has renewed 13 shows!

Stumptown, The Rookie, mixed-ish, black-ish, The Conners, American Housewife, The Goldbergs, A Million Little Things, The Bachelor, Dancing with the Stars, Shark Tank 20/20, and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire will be back during the 2020-21 TV season.

Out of those shows, The Rookie, black-ish, The Conners, A Million Little Things, The Bachelor, Shark Tank, and Dancing With the Stars were widelye expected to return.

Those shows put up some decent ratings during the current season.

Stumptown, starring Cobie Smulders as a P.I., averaged around 2.8 million viewers and a 0.5 rating in the demo, emerging as a soft performer in linear ratings.

Fortunately, the series picked up a lot of steam in post-airdate viewing, so it was in the running for another season.

And fans have been rewarded, despite some testing times.

black-ish spinoff mixed-ish also had soft ratings, with 3 million viewers and a 0.7 rating, but the show's strong point was that it was consistent throughout the season.

A Million Little Things averaged 4.1 million viewers and a 0.7 rating this season, sliding over 20 percent year-to-year, but it was always expected to get a renewal.

It's buzzy, and works well on Thursdays out of Grey's Anatomy.

The above series join previously announced renewals for America’s Funniest Home Videos, American Idol, The Bachelorette, The Good Doctor, Grey’s Anatomy, and Station 19.

But now we have some bad news.

ABC has also swung the ax on four shows.

Schooled, Bless This Mess, Single Parents, and Emergence will not be on the network's 2020-21 TV schedule, meaning that fans have already said goodbye to the shows.

Emergence started its life as an NBC pilot last season, but the network decided against picking it up.

The Alison Tolman-fronted drama was produced by ABC, so it landed on the network's fall 2019 schedule, but viewers did not warm to it.

Despite a solid mystery, the ratings were not there and the series ended its run without a backorder -- usually a sign of what's to come.

Still, many fans held on to hope that a second season could materialize because there was internal support for the project at the network.

As for Schooled, the series is a spinoff to The Goldbergs. For that reason alone, many thought it would land on the next season schedule alongside its parent series.

But the ratings sagged as much as 30% this season, ultimately averaging 3.1 million viewers and a 0.7 rating.

Despite the erosion, it was still a robust performer, so it will go down as a surprising cancellation.

The same can be said for Bless This Mess. The hilarious comedy was actually up slightly in total viewers year-to-year, but this could be attributed to a strong lead-in from The Conners.

It's rare for networks to reward shows that grow in the ratings with a pink slip, but this is not your typical TV season.

The coronavirus pandemic has cast doubt into the future of the industry, with there being no way of telling when any of the scripted shows will be able to return to production.

The other cancellation at ABC was Single Parents.

The series failed to hold up this season, averaging around 2.6 million viewers.
