A couple of guys are driving along in a pickup. The driver is pleased with himself for taking a holster out of a pickup. That must be Bernadette’s gun, as he picked it up down by the river. He’s pleased with himself for being panther-like.

The older fellow driving with him proves how panther-like the driver is when he smothers him with a “have a nice day” grocery bag. He takes the gun from his waistband and shoves the car down the ravine before using the nearby bulldozer to begin dropping dirt on the truck.

The driver wakes up to this nightmare. The ravine looked much larger than the allotment of dirt, but it’s filled in entirely. The only way to know the truck is down there is by the sound of the horn as the driver honks in desperation.

Leaphorn is doing paperwork at the breakfast table. Emma says it doesn’t always have to be him, but he disagrees.

He visits the coroner, pulling back the sheet on an old man covered in dirt. Except it’s not an old man. It’s a young man, his face cut and bleeding. Leaphorn is torn up and in tears when Gordo arrives. He can handle it.

The young man was killed with a claw hammer. His cuts were deep, as if it was personal. Gordo thinks it could be the boys were fighting over something. But Leaphorn doesn’t buy it.

The arrowhead makes no sense. It’s a sacred object, and putting it in Ernesto’s mouth is no different than a catholic defiling a crucifix. 

Gordo says George Bullegs was the suspect before Ernesto was found, but for Leaphorn, the discovery of the arrow changes everything. Now, they need to worry that George is next. 

Ernesto’s parents arrive. As they view their son’s body, the lights in the hallway flicker, and Leaphorn cries.

Chee is asking around about Shorty and wonders if his cousin knows where George is. Is Winford sure he wants to cover for his cousin, becoming an accessory to whatever Shorty did to Ernesto? Winford fesses up. Shorty told him to lie.

Leaphorn visits the archeological site. Dr. Reynolds is there this time. Teddi told him Leaphorn was looking for George and Ernesto. Leaphorn asks about the arrowhead found in Ernesto’s mouth. Teddi is upset, but the actor playing Reynolds often plays a bad guy, so I’ve got my eye on him.

Reynolds says the arrowhead is a fake, a toy. You can tell from the fluting along the edges. It was created by machine, so it couldn’t have come from his site. But wouldn’t Leaphorn have recognized that?

Reynolds says if he sees George, he’ll drag him to Leaphorn. When he exits the trailer, he spots Teddi crying in her vehicle.

Back at the station, he finds Emma chatting with Agent Washington. Emma had no idea women could join the FBI. She found Sylvia to be so smart. Leaphorn assures her she wasn’t sent here because she’s smart. Emma invited her to dinner, much to Joe’s chagrin.

Bernadette is snapping long-range photos of a cabin when an antelope or something rushes her. It’s shot by the time it reaches her. A man nearby has been tracking it. They’re unpredictable when they’re hurt.

He’s Tom Spencer. He knows her as the newest member of their local border patrol. She says she’s following up on the white van.

Today’s her lucky day. He’s not too busy to take her down there, assuming she’d like a closer look.

His great-great-grandfather started all of this. They’ve been there since it was part of Mexico. He was a Santa Fe trader. His great-grandfather was friends with James Calhoun, the first governor. He wasn’t a good guy but was good to Tom’s family.

She’s not interested in the wells but in that white van. She wonders if the plates have been changed in the last couple of days. He laughs. He has a million other things to do, and she has no warrant, so he won’t be looking for who was driving it or letting her look inside, but he does anyway.

Her curiosity never ceases. She wants to see the vapor barrier, too, but he subtly talks her out of it. Since Bruce Greenwood rarely plays a good guy anymore, we’ve got our eye on Tom Spencer, too.

Argent Garza is drinking coffee from the cutest smiley face mug when Tom Spencer calls. Garza thinks Bernadette is nuts to believe Spencer could be trafficking women. The family is responsible for one-third of the actionable intelligence they work with every year.

Spencer must have said something to Senior Chief Ed Henry because he’s called her into his office.

The police arrive at Shorty’s place with a warrant. Leaphorn whispers to Chee, “Hey, ya got ‘im?”

Joe looks in the shed to find the ant farm he gave to the boy on the last episode overturned. The ants lead Joe to a small, claw-like implement with blood on it. In the loft above, the ants are devouring large melons. Still, it freaks out Joe, breathing heavily when Jim finds him.

Shorty is arrested, and he’s on the hook for a long list of crimes when Chee interrogates him. What about the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart, Shorty wonders. Does he have that on his list, too?

Joe puts photos of Ernesto on the table. Shorty is visibly shaken. Joe asks if he did it, but he doesn’t need to hear the answer. 

Jim is angry. He believes Shorty is responsible. But the blood on the murder weapon is from hoofing an animal, so they’ve got nothing.

Sylvia wants to see Joe in “her” office. She doesn’t understand that, with all the evidence against him, they let BJ Vines go on bail. Joe says he tries not to think about it. White man’s justice, he calls it.

She wonders if there’s any other kind. Then she wonders where BJ Vines could have gone. Old, soft, and used to his sexy wife, but without his money.

Bernadette calls for Joe, but Jim answers. They’re playful at first, and then she decides to talk with him about her investigation. They trade investigation stories.

The conversation goes sour when she insinuates that Chee punched Shorty because of a grudge he may still be holding. Still, he chuckles when they hang up.

Outside, Bernadette finds she’s got a flat tire. While she’s changing the tire, her male coworker offers to help. When they’re playing pool afterward, she asks what intelligence they got at Spencer Ranch. She asks about waystation duty. The Spencer tankers run at night, so she doesn’t want to step in it again.

Since the tankers are running oil, all they do is note their weight and send them on their way.

She asks if he misses his family back home. They’re both a long way from it. Tonight, though, she’s not missing anyone. He pulls her to dance when CCR’s The Night Time Is the Right Time begins playing. Her mind seems to be elsewhere when he pulls her close.

Chee visits Shorty, who is packing up his horse with some supplies. Chee thinks Shorty knows where his son is, but Shorty won’t let him take out his animosity for him on his son.

Chee says that if neither George nor Shorty killed Ernesto, then George probably knows, which is why Shorty is packing up to find him. Shorty gives up George’s location. Jim calls Leaphorn. They’re going to go get George together, and he’s not asking.

Bernadette does her job at the weigh station. There’s a second driver in the cab; it’s the guy from the beginning of the episode. His name is Robert De Baca aka Budge.

She takes a look at the load, and it’s not a comfortable position for a female to be in. She climbs the tanker to verify it’s carrying oil. She eyes De Baca warily, and the smirk on his face is discomforting.

Joe, Jim, and Shorty reach the cabin, dismounting well before they reach the gate. It’s windy as hell. They’re worried George will run. Shorty announces himself before opening the door. Something feels wrong, and the horses sense it. 

Joe hears Shorty inside. He sounds surprised and makes a sound. Inside, Joe finds him based in the head. At the door, a man in a grotesque mask rushes him. Chee finds Joe on the gound inside, dazed. He’s bleeding. “It’s real,” he says.
